As kids, we know choosing a gift for a Dad is not easy.
Our dad is a nurse so he doesn't wear ties and he already has more coffee cup mugs than there are days in a month! It's hard to find something he will like and something that's special and different.
Like you, when we give him a gift, we want it be something he will remember as the best gift ever...
A couple of years ago, we had a great idea.
We wanted to give our dad a very special Christmas
gift. We sat down with a fancy piece of paper and thought of 15
different reasons we love him. We wrote them down on the paper,
rolled the paper up and tied it with a ribbon. It was very simple...and it came from our hearts.
On Christmas morning, our dad unrolled the paper and slowly read each reason we
love him...
As he read, he started to smile and his smile got bigger and bigger.
When he finished reading, he opened his arms and gave us a HUGE
hug. He told us it was the best gift he had ever received.
(Our mom said Dad even got a little teary-eyed reading the paper!)
Then our Dad said he was going to put the paper in his wallet so he could always take it with him. He said if he needed to smile, he could pull out his
wallet and read our words again.
We felt really good. It was the best gift we could have given our dad.
A picture is worth a thousand words
but a few words straight from your heart say a lot too.
Since our dad put the paper in his wallet, we thought it might get torn or
even lost so we tried to think of a way to make our words last forever.
Books are forever and so our mom helped us to turn our idea from a piece of paper into a real book
called 15 Reasons I Love My Dad. We made a copy just for our dad and when our friends saw it, they wanted
one for their dad too. So, we changed the book a little bit so our friends could add their own words and their own pictures.
The rest, as they say, is history...our little paper idea is now a full color, hardcover, fill-in-the-blank book!
